And you can often attract these people to invest in your business.

Run an ad in your local paper, highlighting those two key words. Other magic phrases to include are “Local business person with excellent track record and reputable history”; “start-up business opportunity, limited investment, high potential return,” and “references available.”

Magic Phrase #2 — Receive Free Expert Help for your business. Simply announce, “I have a business problem and need expert assistance” either to a local business group (such as the Chamber of Commerce which you have in practically every town) — or putting an advertisement in the business section of your local newspaper. Ticked Off At Being Kicked Off?

You’ve paid for unlimited internet dialup service, but you still get *kicked off* line when you’ve been inactive a few minutes?

It may not be your ISP, it’s probably the network provider. During peak times the network provider will automatically disconnect you if there is inactivity. The Principle of Chaos and Reorganization.

If this is aggravating you, try this little *trick*.

You don’t need any special *pinging* software or any other gimmick that may get you in trouble with your ISP. You probably already have something that’ll work fine. If you have a POP Email account you are likely to already have an email client for checking your email.

The simple and very *legal* thing to do is to configure your email client to check your email every 5 – 9 minutes. This assures constant activity every time you’re connected to the Internet. Just be sure to leave your email client open all the time you’re on the web.

Here’s how to do it with Outlook Express. In the menu bar click Tools – Options. This will open the options window. On the General tab, you’ll see an option that allows you to set the interval at which Outlook Express checks for new mail. The default is probably set to 30 minutes. Change this setting to 9 minutes and see if this keeps you online. It should. If not, set it to 5 minutes.

Whatever email client you’re using should allow you to set the check-for-new-mail interval. Use the client’s help feature to find out how to set this option.

If for some reason you don’t have a POP email account, search the web for free POP email. (One such provider is ematic.com.) Outlook Express is free with the Internet Explorer browser. Set it up, launch it everytime you connect, and stay online uninterrupted.

As publisher of The US All Media E-Mail Directory and electronic database, I know many people can benefit from seeing some techniques and guidelines I’ve developed on how to get news coverage from using e-mail. 

It’s amazing but true, you can use e-mail to get publicity with the media. Articles can enhance your visibility, name recognition, reputation as an expert, and position in your industry. But there are some tricks of the trade that are developing in this really new marketing technique. E-Mail PR is not hard to learn, and the benefits are substantial. 

The Golden Rule: Target & Personalize. 

My experience is there are several essential rules that publicists must abide by in submitting e-mail to the media if they are to avoid the wrath of the recipients and maintain their credibility and reputation as a credible PR practitioner. Here’s my “10 Commandments for Sending E-Mail to The Media” 

1. Think, think, think before you write. Ask yourself why you are writing, and what are you trying to accomplish by writing. Put yourself in the position of the person reading your message. You are a busy media professional. What would you do upon receiving your message? Publish it or toss it? 

2. Target narrowly and carefully. Go for the quality contacts and not the quantity. Don’t broadcast a query or news release or announcement to irrelevant media. Pick out your target media carefully, based on the industry or readership of the specific media you are targeting. Study the media your are writing to. Write the way the editors write. Make it easy for them to use your submittal. 

3. Keep it short. Trim your e-mail message so that it fills one to three screens. Keep it three to four paragraphs tops. Don’t try to sell the media your product. Do try to get their interest and make a request for more information. 

4. Keep the subject and content of your message relevant to your target — it’s got to be newsworthy and timely. The subject should intrigue them enough to read your message. I prefer presenting and proposing problem-solving articles which advocate the benefits or techniques associated with a strategy, technique, product or service. This article is an example. 

5. If you are seeking publicity for a product or service, or want to get reviews for a new book or software, use a two-step approach. Query with a hook and news angle before transmitting a news release, or an article, or offer to send a review copy to those who request it. To avoid angry replies and complaints about unsolicited e-mail send a very brief e-mail requesting their permission to send them a release before actually doing so. 

6. Tailor the submittal to the media editorial style or content. Go to a library, read it online, or write and ask for a free media kit and a sample copy of the magazine or journal. Study the style and content of the media. Then write the way they like it. Seek to develop a longer term relationship as a regular contributor. 

7. Address each e-mail message separately to an individual media target. Take your time and personalize each e-mail. Don’t ever send to multiple addresses. It’s the easiest way to get deleted without being read. 

8. Reread, reread, and reread and rewrite, rewrite, rewrite before you click to send. 

9. Be brutally honest with yourself, and with your media contacts. Don’t make claims about your product or service you can’t prove. 

10. Follow-up in a timely manner, with precision writing and professionalism.

Make the subject of your headline sound as big and as startling as possible. You need to make a huge impact because you just don’t know what other news releases you may be competing against at any given time. 

Your product can then ride on the strength of the news angle. Use the soft sell approach so that your news release will not be regarded as an advertisement. 

Never tell the whole story in your news release. Instead, generate a curiosity that must be satisfied. This is the principle of cognitive dissonance that I teach in-depth in 1001 Killer Internet Marketing Tactics. If you create dissonance in the mind of the editor with an unanswered question, the editor must resolve that conflict by seeking the answer; i.e., by calling you. 

Before you send out your news releases, hand pick your target  media with surgical precision. This is crucial. Getting publicity is not a numbers game. It’s not how many copies of your news release you can broadcast at once, but whom you send it to that matters. The most well-crafted news release will be trash-bound if you send it to the wrong segments of the media. 

Do yourself a big favor. Do not read those mediocre how-to books on publicity that are available everywhere. The only thing you’ll learn from them is how to get your news release thrown into the trash. My theory is that a few decades ago, some misguided person from the school of “Those who can, do — those who can’t, teach” wrote a book on how to write news releases. Then someone else took the same myths and fallacies, and wrote yet another version of the book. Pretty soon, there was a flood of how-to books on publicity — all rehashing the same old dreary methods that simply don’t work. 

Instead, study the PR campaigns of those who have been extremely successful at getting publicity. Study their news releases to find elements that you can emulate for your purposes. Find out the media targets they sent their releases to. 

It is immensely easier, faster, and less expensive to learn, model, and achieve success by following in the footsteps of those who have been successful than it is to learn how to succeed by trial and error. Don’t buy into publicity theory. Go with the hard facts — those strategies that have been proven to work.

Just Five Minutes Longer.

The story has been told and retold countless times about the battle of Waterloo. Poems have been written and songs have been composed detailing every conceivable aspect about it. The English tell it one way and the French share it from a slightly different point of view.

History and legend has it that after Napoleon Bonaparte’s army was defeated and the Duke of Wellington prevailed over the French, Napoleon was taken away and imprisoned. One day a group of newspaper reporters came to visit. They had obtained permission to hold an interview with the famous French general Napoleon Bonaparte.

Even though Napoleon was in prison, he carried himself with dignity and looked with piercing eyes at the group of reporters gathered there before him. Questions were asked and answers given. The reporters wrote every word down. This would, indeed, be good reading. They would boast to their children and grandchildren how they stood before the great general on that long ago day.

Suddenly, from the back of the room, a voice, somewhat more gentle than the others was heard above the din. “Mon general,” the reporter said, “Tell me why the English won at Waterloo. Did they have a superior army?”

“No!” replied Napoleon.

“Well, did they have better weapons?” asked another reporter.

“No!” was the answer again.

Then the first reporter asked again, “Why then, Mr. General, did the English win?”

Napoleon’s eyes slowly swept across the room. The silence was so deep that it was almost deafening. You could have heard the proverbial pin drop. Then he replied, “The English fought five minutes longer.”

From the mouth of the great general himself came the answer, “The English fought five minutes longer”. Many times, five minutes longer is all that it takes. Times have changed from the days of the Emperor Napoleon. But many things still remain the same.

Sometimes victory is just a few minutes away. Yes, I know, we all go through terrible times. In today’s world many of us are faced with crisis after crisis. For most, there is never enough money, no jobs, poor relationships, ill health and the list could go on and on. Of course, there are good times, too, but the hard times usually block our vision of the good times.

When things get really bad, we turn this way and that looking for some help or at least some hope to keep on keeping on. Anything will do–a kind word from a friend, a paragraph from a good book, a stray piece of music from the radio, even a Hollywood movie.

Some people will be there for you, others will turn and run from you, fearing for their own well-being. Still others may throw you a crumb of money, or food and hope you won’t ask for more. Be grateful. They do as they see fit to do at the moment. Your job is to just keep on keeping on.

When you are down in the arena and the dust is in your mouth and you can hear the screaming of the crowd, remember, “The English fought five minutes longer.” Sometimes it’s so bad that one day at a time is too long. So go one hour at a time. And if that’s too long, then how about five minutes at a time?

Success is sometimes just yards or minutes away. There are times when the last few yards may seem like miles and the last few minutes may appear to be hours. But if you keep on keeping on, if you do not let hope die, if you have faith in the goodness of the universe and the Force that created us, you will win in the end.

Finding Gems In The Dirt.

On my morning walk last week, I looked down and saw a diamond earring lying on the sidewalk.

Yes, a real diamond, approximately a fifth of a caret, and excellent quality.

It was lying right out in plain sight, perfectly visible and sparkling in the sunlight.

But nobody else saw it — most people DON’T see the things that are right underfoot. Especially the opportunities that lie scattered all around us.

A few months ago, just as my wife and I exited the train station near our house, I found a wallet. Filled with money, but no identification. We turned it in at the train station, hoping its owner would reclaim it. Aw Son, Just HIT the Thing.

Six months went by, however, and the other day they called to say that the wallet and money (about $350.00) was ours.

But finding wallets or diamonds is not the only way to gain unexpected riches.

There are a million opportunities — little gems just waiting for somebody to pick them up, brush them off and profit from them.

These days, thousands of people are being downsized, laid off or otherwise tossed out on the street. No job. No prospects. No hopes.

What can they do?

Let’s talk about SMALL opportunities… things the average, non-rich person without huge assets, and maybe without a job or savings, can turn into a profit.

Mike, a friend of mine first came to Japan in 1965 with just enough money saved to study Judo for a few months. His dream was to become better at a sport he loved.

The mid-sixties was a time of fabulous growth in Japan. Companies were turning out massive quantities of goods for export to the Western countries. And all those products needed brochures and manuals in English, the near-universal language of business.

Mike may have been studying Judo, but he had a sensitive nose for opportunity. He visited several translation agencies and asked if they needed somebody to smooth out the English in their translations.

They did, and a new career was born. Mike went on to live many years in Japan, working first as a rewriter and advertising copywriter (neither of which he’d had training in), then eventually as a very successful translator.

Many years ago, I was out of work in a new city. I was not quite broke, though it was close, so I decided I’d start up a small part-time business while I looked around for something more substantial.

I decided on house painting. It’s easy to get into because few people want to do their own, and some of the professionals in the business are not very professional.

Art is not my strongest talent, but I spent about three hours drawing and re-drawing a simple, perky little painter character. It took me that long to get it looking good enough to use. Then I had an instant printer run me off a batch of business cards featuring that character as my logo.

Note that catch phrase. A lot of people worry that when they hire a stranger, he’ll come in, sling paint around, and make a mess. Whatever business you decide on, try to identify a fear that you can soothe, making you a hero to your potential customers.

Next, I had the printer do up some more business cards, but these were on regular copy paper. He made them into pads of 50 each. I glued each pad of these “cards” onto a 3 by 5 inch index card and wrote “Take One” at the top. Dead simple concept.

About half of the grocery stores in the area had bulletin boards so that’s where I thumbtacked my little ads. I figured it’d take months to get semi-busy.

I was wrong.

The phone started ringing within two days, and after one month, I was working seven days a week and had a month and a half of work backed up.

Two years later, when I moved on, I sold the painting business to a friend for a nice little profit.

Moral of that story? If you don’t mind doing what others don’t want to do or can’t do, you’ve got a real opportunity on your hands.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I had never painted a house nor hung wallpaper before in my life. I just went to the library and checked out how-to books. For other info, I asked advice at the paint stores where I bought supplies. They were happy to help me.

Another time, I was in a small city of about 150,000. This was well before the age of computers.

I looked around and saw that there were only two or three fairly large typewriter repair shops, and they were expensive, so I went to the library and looked up a supplier of typewriter parts and tools.

The next day, I put a small classified ad in the newspaper, offering to repair typewriters.

That supplier gladly sold me parts in lots of one and two, and resurfaced the rubber plattens when they required it.

Although I wasn’t flooded with work, it paid the rent, put groceries on the table and left me with considerable free time to read and goof off.

Today, the opportunity won’t be in typewriters. Think computers, web design, ad writing. If you have strong English skills, you can even do rewriting, like I did for more than 16 years here in Japan.

But you don’t have to go to Japan to find customers.

Consider how many non-native English speakers need help with the English on their websites. Visitors judge them by the quality of their English, and if they are not a native speaker, they will be judged harshly. It’s not fair, but they will be judged.

You could help them present a more professional face.

That’s just one possibility. There are literally millions of small (and not-so-small) opportunities out there. With some clever promoting, you could end up making a six-figure income without even having a product.

I’ve found that if you’ll just try, you can do nearly anything. There are always small gems, little opportunities, lying around just waiting for somebody to come along and pick them up.

But they’re often lying in the dirt. If a little dirt’s no problem, you can always make a decent living.

By the way, that wallet I found? It also contained 20 lottery tickets. When I checked them, there were no big winners, only two very small ones – but they did provide me 200 yen (about $1.50 or so).

I think my father had his doubts about how I’d turn out. He was always “encouraging” me to stop thinking so much and take direct action. But I was a slow learner in that area.

Most of us learn early that even with luck on our side, we’ve got to put some real effort into our goals if we want to reach them.

But even in the smaller, more routine activities of life, we’ve got to put some spine into it. Otherwise, we’ll fail, but not the big, dramatic failures where we KNOW we’ve run aground.

Worse, we often only half-fail. Then we’ll coast along, kidding ourselves that things aren’t really so bad… that things could be worse… and they MIGHT get better… mightn’t they?

Half-floundering like this can go on for decades, and we’ve all seen it squeeze the life from careers, businesses, marriages.

If you were lucky, you learned the lesson about gumption early on, but for many of us, that lesson didn’t come until we had our noses rubbed in it a number of times. Or maybe we’re still learning it.

Of course, it’s true that there’s a proper time for thinking, weighing and analyzing. And it should be done very thoroughly. But once that phase is past – if we’ve done it right – the analyzing should make way for action. Thinking too long can leave us waiting until-this or until-that happens.

These days my work is mostly on the Internet. But there’s one principle that I use nearly every day.

My father ran a plumbing shop in the competitive western Chicago suburbs. Now and then, when a man didn’t show up or called in sick, he’d ask me to fill in for one or another of his regular laborers. I wasn’t union, but apparently it was okay. He had friends.

One day he set me to work breaking a concrete floor. We had to chip out the cement around a drain, replace it, and trowel in new cement to seal it.

Now, you need to understand. My father was built like a tree stump, while I ran more along the lines of beanpole. I was not his favorite worker because I “thought too much and wasn’t very strong.”

This floor breaking job was not the kind of work I enjoyed. It involved holding a cold chisel and swinging a five-pound baby sledge hammer at it really hard. Often my aim was bad so the hammer missed the chisel and slammed into my wrist instead.

About ten minutes after he put me to work breaking the floor, dad came back, expecting to find the job completed. It wasn’t.

“Son, just what the heck have you been doing all this time?”

“Well, dad,” I told him proudly, “I figured out a good way to do this more safely. I just tap the chisel and move it, tap it and move it. I’m generating a circle of shock waves down into the concrete. That way, it’ll break along the lines and I won’t hurt my wrist again.”

Dad gave me a truly worried look. He said, “Aw son, just HIT the thing.”

Well, I did hit it then. And the job only took five more minutes to finish. Oddly enough, even though I managed to hammer my hand two or three times, I was proud that I’d just gone ahead and done it.

Of course, Dad did practice what he preached. He had a whole quart jar on his dresser at home filled with broken watches that he’d smashed doing exactly what he was advising me to do. He kept them as a reminder, he said, that if you’ll just go ahead and do the job, you can afford to buy all the watches you need.

But the lesson I learned that day has never left me.

And even today, nearly 40 years later, when I’m tapping tentatively away on the edges of some job or other, trying to launch a new website without making any mistakes, or trying to figure out which script I need to install but I’m reluctant to invest the time to just install one and see what it does, I still sometimes hear my father’s voice:

“Aw son, just HIT the thing.”

When I hear that, I have to grin because he’s still urging me to take action, be less cautious. Just go ahead and get the job done, never mind the bumps and bruises.

But I Don’t Want to Wait THAT Long.

Years ago I worked in a camera shop with a man named Sam who was constantly bemoaning his bad luck. He often talked about Mr. Dawson, a man in his seventies who was really lucky. Dawson owned buildings all over the western suburbs of Chicago.

One day when he mentioned Dawson, I commented, “Hey, Sam, you’re only thirty-five now. Why don’t you start buying buildings this year? By the time you’re seventy-five you’ll have become as rich as Dawson.”

He glared at me and stated huffily, “But I don’t want to wait THAT long.”

It took me a while to figure it out: Sam didn’t want to BECOME rich. He wanted to BE rich. No time delay, no learning, no work.

The last time I saw Sam, fifteen years later, he was fifty and still working in a camera shop for about the same pay. Still not wanting to wait.

The point here is obvious, so I won’t belabor it.

However, if you have ambitions for greater wealth, here are 5 tips I’ve personally found useful.

1. Find somebody who’s doing it

I’d never had much success until I met John, who said he’d lived in Japan for years and had made good money there.

After he returned to Japan, he phoned and invited me to come on over, too. “There’s lots of work and the pay’s terrific,” he told me.

I didn’t quite believe it would work for me, but I tried it anyway. And that was the start of a great new career – and leap in income.

I found success by following the example of somebody who was already succeeding.

2. Feel like you DESERVE success

If there’s something inside you that feels you don’t deserve good things, it’ll try to sabotage you at the most unexpected times.

Old habits may pop back up to dilute your energies. Or you might start unintentionally alienating your most important employees, customers or suppliers.

There are a million ways to defeat yourself when you don’t feel you deserve success.

How do you lock in a feeling of deserving?

Some people set aside a certain amount of time to devote to worthy causes. Others donate a tithe of their income to charity or church. Still others meditate on their oneness with their Creator.

The best approach for you will be the one that satisfies your own inner need for reassureance and a feeling of worth.

3. You’re not ENTITLED to success

A common wrong turn is the attitude of entitlement.

Please understand, life does not OWE you or me anything.

It strews untold riches and joys at our feet, but it’s up to us to recognize them, to reach down and pick them up.

Russell Conwell was famous for telling the story of a man who sold his farm and went off in search of diamonds. He traveled the world for decades without success.

But the man who bought that farm from him found one of the largest diamond deposits ever discovered on the African continent. The black sand in the stream running through his property was loaded with diamonds, and he became enormously wealthy.

The first man had sold his land for nearly nothing and walked away from the riches that life had literally strewn at his feet. True story, by the way.

4. Sometimes it’s a grind

Most times, opportunities come in kit form. You ask life for a chance at becoming rich, and circumstances send you a problem or a puzzle.

You may notice that many other people have that same problem. Once you solve it for yourself, you can then make a very nice profit helping other people to quickly overcome the same difficulty.

Life has just given you a rich opportunity. It does that all the time, but mostly we don’t notice because we’re so busy griping about what a grind life is, what a raw deal we have.

5. Be thankful in advance

It’s just as simple as managing well what you’ve already got. Appreciate and be thankful for the things you already have. Love the people who are already in your life.

It is said that nature abhors a vacuum.

When you give thanks – real, soul-lifting, jubilant thanks -for things you don’t have yet, nature rushes in to fill that vacuum.

It’ll fill that void with all the things and qualities and people that are bubbling joyously in your heart and mind.

Of course, you can say, “Nah, it can’t be that simple,” lay this aside and surf on to the next site.

Or you can try these ideas.

If you do try, I believe you’ll discover that life is EAGER to hand you more of what you want.

To summarize, you can simply:

1. Follow in the footsteps of somebody who’s already successful. They can save you countless wrong turns.

2. Master those feelings that you don’t deserve good things. Make sure your success benefits others even more than it does you.

3. Accept that life doesn’t owe you anything – besides you’re not yet recognizing all that it’s offering you now.

4. Remember that some assembly may be required. Ask life for a cake and it may hand you flour, water, sugar and eggs.
