17 Magic Words That Can Make You a Fortune.

You might think this strange, but every day, before I start work, I stand up, look to the sky, throw my hands in the air, and shout out loud: “I feel terrific!”

This is what I call an ‘affirmation’ — positive self-talk to charge up my emotions and help me produce my very best work. An affirmation can be as simply as “YES!”…as uplifting as “I’m very happy at this moment!”…or as determined as “I’m willing to do whatever is necessary to succeed!”

Try it for yourself right now. Choose a positive message you want to tell yourself. Then stand up, put your head back, throw your arms up, and shout it out loud. Makes you feel uncomfortable? Good! You’ve just discovered how powerful words can be.

Unlimited Success & Wealth are All In the Words You Use

What’s the single most important asset you and your business possess? Forget money and numbers. The true currency of business is WORDS. Communicating your ideas, your offer, the benefits of your product — using words to achieve your aims is the single most important activity any business ever performs.

Unlimited success and wealth are as simple as using the right words. You can get everything you’ve ever wanted in life, simply by saying the right words — because the words which you communicate determine the quality of your life.

This is true whether communicating with others or with yourself. Especially with yourself. Healing Eyes with Stem Cell Transplants.

Words have the power to induce someone to laugh, to cry, to be kind, to be loving, to be cooperative, or to buy. Or be unkind, angry, irrational. Whether words are written or spoken, they have enormous power. Of course, when words are spoken, the added factors of voice timbre, emphasis, emotion…all have the potential to cause even more impact.

Use Words to Achieve a Win-Win Situation

Here is what few businesspeople seem to realize: People all over the world really want to help and accommodate their fellow humans. But they must be approached properly. The magic words I’ll reveal to you in a moment can manipulate a situation to bring you what you want — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Magic Words Can Bring You Riches

The same words, strategies and techniques which I’ve used to get the best results from everyday situations — like renting a Mercedes for the price of a Ford, slashing the cost of a first class hotel room, and buying valuable antiques at huge discounts — can work magic for your business, too. Here are 3 of the phrases which have helped me build a career marketing over $500,000,000 of both my own and my client’s products and services.

Magic Phrase #1 — Attract All the Money You Need for any business venture you’d like to start. The magic words here are “sophisticated investor.” Every successful professional — such as a doctor or lawyer — likes to think of himself or herself as sophisticated. And you can often attract these people to invest in your business.

Run an ad in your local paper, highlighting those two key words. Other magic phrases to include are “Local business person with excellent track record and reputable history”; “start-up business opportunity, limited investment, high potential return,” and “references available.”

Magic Phrase #2 — Receive Free Expert Help for your business. Simply announce, “I have a business problem and need expert assistance” either to a local business group (such as the Chamber of Commerce which you have in practically every town) — or putting an advertisement in the business section of your local newspaper. I’ve been absolutely delighted with the quality of assistance provided to me on several occasions by retired executives. Seek them out in your local area, and you could benefit from this great source of experienced know-how, too.

Magic Phrase #3 — Get Capable People to Work for Free. Your magic words here are “piece of the action.” Instead of paying a fixed salary, run ads offering people one of these options:

  • Hourly rate for services rendered
  • Percentage of sales
  • Percentage of profits
  • Royalty on sales
  • Percentage of savings
  • Fixed payment for each unit produce

Anyone with a strong entrepreneurial instinct will be attracted by such an approach. It means there will be no limit on their income, they will be more independent, they can set their own hours — and the harder they work, the more they earn. This is just the type of person you should employ. /ten-hot-tips-get-news-coverage.

Assume The Other Person Has Already Said “Yes”

Ask questions which assume the end result you seek. For example, speaking with your bank manager about setting up a merchant account, you might ask these questions:

1. “How long does it normally take for a credit card charge to be credited to my account?”

2. “What discount or percentage of credit card sales will the bank charge us for your service?”

3. “How long would it take to get the service in place?”

4. “What equipment do we need to buy to make it easier for your bank to process our orders?”

Can you see how the end result — having a merchant account so you can process the credit card orders — is assumed by the very words used in each question? /ticked-off-at-being-kicked-off.

Magic Words Deliver Power

And this is especially true when you’re speaking to yourself. As I said at the beginning of this letter, I use affirmations every day — standing up, looking to the sky, throwing my hands in the air, and shouting out a positive message I need to tell myself.

Yes, I feel ridiculous when I do this too. But that discomfort is just the push I need to change my emotional state. The magic words in my affirmations give me the energy and determination I need to produce my very best work. And I truly believe they’ll help you achieve your goals too.

Ticked Off At Being Kicked Off?

You’ve paid for unlimited internet dialup service, but you still get *kicked off* line when you’ve been inactive a few minutes?

It may not be your ISP, it’s probably the network provider. During peak times the network provider will automatically disconnect you if there is inactivity. The Principle of Chaos and Reorganization.

If this is aggravating you, try this little *trick*.

You don’t need any special *pinging* software or any other gimmick that may get you in trouble with your ISP. You probably already have something that’ll work fine. If you have a POP Email account you are likely to already have an email client for checking your email.

The simple and very *legal* thing to do is to configure your email client to check your email every 5 – 9 minutes. This assures constant activity every time you’re connected to the Internet. Just be sure to leave your email client open all the time you’re on the web.

Here’s how to do it with Outlook Express. In the menu bar click Tools – Options. This will open the options window. On the General tab, you’ll see an option that allows you to set the interval at which Outlook Express checks for new mail. The default is probably set to 30 minutes. Change this setting to 9 minutes and see if this keeps you online. It should. If not, set it to 5 minutes.

Whatever email client you’re using should allow you to set the check-for-new-mail interval. Use the client’s help feature to find out how to set this option.

If for some reason you don’t have a POP email account, search the web for free POP email. (One such provider is Outlook Express is free with the Internet Explorer browser. Set it up, launch it everytime you connect, and stay online uninterrupted.

I Just Stole Your Commission!

I’m so glad you’re a Clickbank affiliate who doesn’t know how to protect your Hop URL! You see, I just substituted my Clickbank nickname for yours in your link URL and now I get your commission.

What this amounts to is that I can purchase the product and save 25%, 40%, 50%, or whatever amount the merchant commission is. But, I robbed YOU! Ethical? No, but many unscrupulous people don’t even consider whether a tactic such as this is right or wrong.

“I don’t need to worry”, you say, “I’m using a redirect URL”. What if I click on your link, get redirected, and see your Clickbank Hop URL in the browser window? All I have to do is substitute mine for yours and click “Go”. You just lost your commission.

So, how can you prevent this? Very simple. Use an “invisible” frame to hide your Clickbank Hop URL. This will keep your domain URL in the browser window. Here’s a working example for you to try:

Now, here’s the HTML for an invisible frame redirect page.

<title>Profits Vault</title>
<meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html;charset=iso-8859-1″>

<frameset BORDER=”0″ FRAMESPACING=”0″ FRAMEBORDER=”0″ rows=”0,*”>
<frame NAME=”main” SRC=”main.html” SCROLLING=”yes” MARGINWIDTH=”0″ MARGINHEIGHT=”0″>

(Note: SRC=”main.html” – this is the page with the redirect URL that loads while the redirect URL page is being opened).

Copy and paste into your favorite text editor, change the URL, save as an HTML document and upload it to your server. Point your product link to your new web page. This may not be 100% secure, but it should eliminate 99% of the problem.

Ten Hot Tips For Using E-Mail To Get News Coverage For Business.

As publisher of The US All Media E-Mail Directory and electronic database, I know many people can benefit from seeing some techniques and guidelines I’ve developed on how to get news coverage from using e-mail.

It’s amazing but true, you can use e-mail to get publicity with the media. Articles can enhance your visibility, name recognition, reputation as an expert, and position in your industry. But there are some tricks of the trade that are developing in this really new marketing technique. E-Mail PR is not hard to learn, and the benefits are substantial.

The Golden Rule: Target & Personalize.

My experience is there are several essential rules that publicists must abide by in submitting e-mail to the media if they are to avoid the wrath of the recipients and maintain their credibility and reputation as a credible PR practitioner. Here’s my “10 Commandments for Sending E-Mail to The Media”

1. Think, think, think before you write. Ask yourself why you are writing, and what are you trying to accomplish by writing. Put yourself in the position of the person reading your message. You are a busy media professional. What would you do upon receiving your message? Publish it or toss it?

2. Target narrowly and carefully. Go for the quality contacts and not the quantity. Don’t broadcast a query or news release or announcement to irrelevant media. Pick out your target media carefully, based on the industry or readership of the specific media you are targeting. Study the media your are writing to. Write the way the editors write. Make it easy for them to use your submittal.

3. Keep it short. Trim your e-mail message so that it fills one to three screens. Keep it three to four paragraphs tops. Don’t try to sell the media your product. Do try to get their interest and make a request for more information.

4. Keep the subject and content of your message relevant to your target — it’s got to be newsworthy and timely. The subject should intrigue them enough to read your message. I prefer presenting and proposing problem-solving articles which advocate the benefits or techniques associated with a strategy, technique, product or service. This article is an example.

5. If you are seeking publicity for a product or service, or want to get reviews for a new book or software, use a two-step approach. Query with a hook and news angle before transmitting a news release, or an article, or offer to send a review copy to those who request it. To avoid angry replies and complaints about unsolicited e-mail send a very brief e-mail requesting their permission to send them a release before actually doing so.

6. Tailor the submittal to the media editorial style or content. Go to a library, read it online, or write and ask for a free media kit and a sample copy of the magazine or journal. Study the style and content of the media. Then write the way they like it. Seek to develop a longer term relationship as a regular contributor.

7. Address each e-mail message separately to an individual media target. Take your time and personalize each e-mail. Don’t ever send to multiple addresses. It’s the easiest way to get deleted without being read.

8. Reread, reread, and reread and rewrite, rewrite, rewrite before you click to send.

9. Be brutally honest with yourself, and with your media contacts. Don’t make claims about your product or service you can’t prove.

10. Follow-up in a timely manner, with precision writing and professionalism.

Welcome to the World of Electronic Commerce. Remember though, there are real people at the receiving end, and your success with the media depends on your respecting the media and being courteous, and your credibility, reputation and performance.

Good luck and prosper. It is not hard to garner news coverage if you take your time and do a careful job. The benefits can be phenomenal. E-mail is a good way to make the most of limited funds. You can work locally, regionally, or nationally, and all you need is a computer with an Internet connection and e-mail.

Just remember, you can and should use e-mail to get news coverage for your business, but you shouldn’t rely on e-mail  alone. When used together with conventional PR (mail, paper, phone and fax), you get the maximum effect. You cultivate relationships with media by becoming known as a valuable contributor. You give them what their readers want, they give you the free publicity.

Would You Rather Be Rich or Famous? This is Not a Trick Question.

“Champagne wishes and caviar dreams…”

Our fascination with the “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” kept us riveted to the TV screen for 9 years as Robin Leach entertained us with mouth-watering glimpses of how the rich and famous live.

Most of us yearn for wealth and fame, and yet secretly believe that those commodities are beyond our reach — that they are reserved for others, not us. A Direct Response Minisite Can Be A Sticky Situation!

What if I told you that most of the rich and famous people in the world became rich and famous simply because they knew how to ethically influence the media? And what if I told you that if you could learn their publicity secrets, wealth and fame are yours for the asking?

The truth is, there is no method more powerful or less costly for creating fame or fortune than publicity

Publicity starts with a news release. The news release is one of the world’s best marketing tools, but is also that wretched thing that often shatters the hopes of all who dare to seek publicity. But stick with me and I’ll show you how to get the upper hand that will put you far ahead of all others who have tried and failed.

Most experienced business people have a story to tell about their attempts at getting publicity — and it always ends with the same question: “Why do I even bother?”

The fact is that millions of dollars worth of publicity is available to anyone who knows how to get it. One person I know who has the best batting average at getting publicity is Paul Krupin. Paul’s PR client list consists of the largest roster of rags-to-riches people and companies ever to be assembled in one place.

Paul reveals the sobering fact that 90% or more of the news releases received by editors end up in the trash. According to Paul, nothing annoys busy editors more than news releases that are poorly written. More particularly, there are 3 mistakes — and these are serious, fatal errors that most people make with news releases.

1) Your news releases talk about you too much. They say me, me, me — or my product, my product, my product.

2) Your news releases are an advertisement. They sell, sell, sell.

3) You’re sending your news releases to the wrong media.

Okay, so you’ve made some or all of these mistakes at one time or another. But don’t worry, it’s not just you. Most people fail to focus on the needs of the editor. They don’t create information that is aimed at the editor’s audience. So they fail to get the editor’s attention, and ultimately fail to get publicity.

How then can you make sure that your news release does not end up as a statistic?

Your news release should be about one thing only — news. If you have a newsworthy angle, it hooks the editor into reading every word of your news release. Make the subject of your headline sound as big and as startling as possible. You need to make a huge impact because you just don’t know what other news releases you may be competing against at any given time.

Your product can then ride on the strength of the news angle. Use the soft sell approach so that your news release will not be regarded as an advertisement.

Never tell the whole story in your news release. Instead, generate a curiosity that must be satisfied. This is the principle of cognitive dissonance that I teach in-depth in 1001 Killer Internet Marketing Tactics. If you create dissonance in the mind of the editor with an unanswered question, the editor must resolve that conflict by seeking the answer; i.e., by calling you.

Before you send out your news releases, hand pick your target  media with surgical precision. This is crucial. Getting publicity is not a numbers game. It’s not how many copies of your news release you can broadcast at once, but whom you send it to that matters. The most well-crafted news release will be trash-bound if you send it to the wrong segments of the media.

Do yourself a big favor. Do not read those mediocre how-to books on publicity that are available everywhere. The only thing you’ll learn from them is how to get your news release thrown into the trash. My theory is that a few decades ago, some misguided person from the school of “Those who can, do — those who can’t, teach” wrote a book on how to write news releases. Then someone else took the same myths and fallacies, and wrote yet another version of the book. Pretty soon, there was a flood of how-to books on publicity — all rehashing the same old dreary methods that simply don’t work.

Instead, study the PR campaigns of those who have been extremely successful at getting publicity. Study their news releases to find elements that you can emulate for your purposes. Find out the media targets they sent their releases to.

It is immensely easier, faster, and less expensive to learn, model, and achieve success by following in the footsteps of those who have been successful than it is to learn how to succeed by trial and error. Don’t buy into publicity theory. Go with the hard facts — those strategies that have been proven to work.

The Secret That Gets You The Money You Want!

Name something you want.

It can be a weight-loss goal, a money goal, a sales quota, a new house, a relationship, etc. It’s entirely up to you.

Since my book is about money, think about your money goals. How much more money are you seeking, anyway? A hundred dollars? Thousands? A million? How to Market The Daylights Out of Just About Anything Using the Dollars for Dimes Principle?

Now let me ask you a blunt question:

Why don’t you have it yet?

Why don’t you have the thinner body, or more money, or whatever it is you said you wanted?

Now let me tell you something shocking:

The fault isn’t with the economy, your parents, your spouse, your neighbors, your mayor, the president or anyone or anything outside of you.

So, what’s the secret to making life a joy?

What’s the secret to creating more money now?

And what’s the answer to why you haven’t achieved your goals yet? It’s in your own mind. Five Stress Relief Tips.

No, not in your thoughts. Not in your conscious mind. The roadblock is deeper. It’s where you rarely look. It’s in your un-conscious.

In short, if there is something you are trying to achieve-you name it-and you aren’t achieving it, chances are your unconscious holds some contradictory intentions for you.

Said another way, you want something and it doesn’t.

If you are typical, you are constantly giving yourself contradictory instructions-like “I want to lose weight” and “I want that luscious piece of pie.”

Notice anything odd about them?

Those statements are going in different directions. After years of such frustrating and contradictory messages, your unconscious gives up and starts to disregard what you consciously want. Why Take a Mediterranean Cruise ?

In other words, you canceled out your own request. You said, “I want money,” but right after that you said (or thought), “I don’t deserve it” or “Money never comes to me” or some other similar limiting belief.

As a result, you usually didn’t get what you said you wanted!

But I have good news for you.

All that can end now. You can learn two simple three-step processes that will put an end to the mental self-sabotage that has been holding you back. Now you’ll finally be able to show your unconscious mind exactly how to let you achieve what you consciously want.

I said “simple,” but that doesn’t mean “easy.” It won’t happen automatically, just by holding these pages in your hand or thinking beautiful thoughts. There’s no magic or hocus-pocus. But there is a method. And it can be called magical.

Read on and you’ll learn about a tried and tested three step process that can transform your world and bring you all the riches you’ve ever imagined.

I’ve proven this method will work by testing it on 50,000 people. Now you can prove it will work for you.

First, let me introduce you to the basic three steps:

  1. Create a Target that defines what you want, one that is clearly understood by all aspects of your un-conscious mind.
Think of the bull’s eye of an archery target with its concentric circles enclosing a central red circle. Your unconscious mind needs something as clear as that circle, a target that indicates exactly what you want.
  2. Prioritize your Target -Flag it so that you will remain unconsciously focused on it while you get on with your normal activities.

Imagine a large crowd of people, all dressed alike in gray. Now picture one of them holding up your highly graphic bull’s eye target with the bright red center.
  1. Chances are, the target is what will catch your eye. That’s what happens in your unconscious mind when you have appropriately prioritized your target.
  2. Resolve any self-defeating un-conscious habit patterns that can prevent you from achieving your target.

Just Five Minutes Longer.

The story has been told and retold countless times about the battle of Waterloo. Poems have been written and songs have been composed detailing every conceivable aspect about it. The English tell it one way and the French share it from a slightly different point of view.

History and legend has it that after Napoleon Bonaparte’s army was defeated and the Duke of Wellington prevailed over the French, Napoleon was taken away and imprisoned. One day a group of newspaper reporters came to visit. They had obtained permission to hold an interview with the famous French general Napoleon Bonaparte.

Even though Napoleon was in prison, he carried himself with dignity and looked with piercing eyes at the group of reporters gathered there before him. Questions were asked and answers given. The reporters wrote every word down. This would, indeed, be good reading. They would boast to their children and grandchildren how they stood before the great general on that long ago day.

Suddenly, from the back of the room, a voice, somewhat more gentle than the others was heard above the din. “Mon general,” the reporter said, “Tell me why the English won at Waterloo. Did they have a superior army?”

“No!” replied Napoleon.

“Well, did they have better weapons?” asked another reporter.

“No!” was the answer again.

Then the first reporter asked again, “Why then, Mr. General, did the English win?”

Napoleon’s eyes slowly swept across the room. The silence was so deep that it was almost deafening. You could have heard the proverbial pin drop. Then he replied, “The English fought five minutes longer.”

From the mouth of the great general himself came the answer, “The English fought five minutes longer”. Many times, five minutes longer is all that it takes. Times have changed from the days of the Emperor Napoleon. But many things still remain the same.

Sometimes victory is just a few minutes away. Yes, I know, we all go through terrible times. In today’s world many of us are faced with crisis after crisis. For most, there is never enough money, no jobs, poor relationships, ill health and the list could go on and on. Of course, there are good times, too, but the hard times usually block our vision of the good times.

When things get really bad, we turn this way and that looking for some help or at least some hope to keep on keeping on. Anything will do–a kind word from a friend, a paragraph from a good book, a stray piece of music from the radio, even a Hollywood movie.

Some people will be there for you, others will turn and run from you, fearing for their own well-being. Still others may throw you a crumb of money, or food and hope you won’t ask for more. Be grateful. They do as they see fit to do at the moment. Your job is to just keep on keeping on.

When you are down in the arena and the dust is in your mouth and you can hear the screaming of the crowd, remember, “The English fought five minutes longer.” Sometimes it’s so bad that one day at a time is too long. So go one hour at a time. And if that’s too long, then how about five minutes at a time?

Success is sometimes just yards or minutes away. There are times when the last few yards may seem like miles and the last few minutes may appear to be hours. But if you keep on keeping on, if you do not let hope die, if you have faith in the goodness of the universe and the Force that created us, you will win in the end.

Why did Napoleon lose to the English at the battle of Waterloo? The English simply fought five minutes longer.

Finding Gems In The Dirt.

On my morning walk last week, I looked down and saw a diamond earring lying on the sidewalk.

Yes, a real diamond, approximately a fifth of a caret, and excellent quality.

It was lying right out in plain sight, perfectly visible and sparkling in the sunlight.

But nobody else saw it — most people DON’T see the things that are right underfoot. Especially the opportunities that lie scattered all around us.

A few months ago, just as my wife and I exited the train station near our house, I found a wallet. Filled with money, but no identification. We turned it in at the train station, hoping its owner would reclaim it. Aw Son, Just HIT the Thing.

Six months went by, however, and the other day they called to say that the wallet and money (about $350.00) was ours.

But finding wallets or diamonds is not the only way to gain unexpected riches.

There are a million opportunities — little gems just waiting for somebody to pick them up, brush them off and profit from them.

These days, thousands of people are being downsized, laid off or otherwise tossed out on the street. No job. No prospects. No hopes.

What can they do?

Let’s talk about SMALL opportunities… things the average, non-rich person without huge assets, and maybe without a job or savings, can turn into a profit.

Mike, a friend of mine first came to Japan in 1965 with just enough money saved to study Judo for a few months. His dream was to become better at a sport he loved.

The mid-sixties was a time of fabulous growth in Japan. Companies were turning out massive quantities of goods for export to the Western countries. And all those products needed brochures and manuals in English, the near-universal language of business.

Mike may have been studying Judo, but he had a sensitive nose for opportunity. He visited several translation agencies and asked if they needed somebody to smooth out the English in their translations.

They did, and a new career was born. Mike went on to live many years in Japan, working first as a rewriter and advertising copywriter (neither of which he’d had training in), then eventually as a very successful translator.

Many years ago, I was out of work in a new city. I was not quite broke, though it was close, so I decided I’d start up a small part-time business while I looked around for something more substantial.

I decided on house painting. It’s easy to get into because few people want to do their own, and some of the professionals in the business are not very professional.

Art is not my strongest talent, but I spent about three hours drawing and re-drawing a simple, perky little painter character. It took me that long to get it looking good enough to use. Then I had an instant printer run me off a batch of business cards featuring that character as my logo.

Charles Burke
The Careful Painter

Note that catch phrase. A lot of people worry that when they hire a stranger, he’ll come in, sling paint around, and make a mess. Whatever business you decide on, try to identify a fear that you can soothe, making you a hero to your potential customers.

Next, I had the printer do up some more business cards, but these were on regular copy paper. He made them into pads of 50 each. I glued each pad of these “cards” onto a 3 by 5 inch index card and wrote “Take One” at the top. Dead simple concept.

About half of the grocery stores in the area had bulletin boards so that’s where I thumbtacked my little ads. I figured it’d take months to get semi-busy.

I was wrong.

The phone started ringing within two days, and after one month, I was working seven days a week and had a month and a half of work backed up.

Two years later, when I moved on, I sold the painting business to a friend for a nice little profit.

Moral of that story? If you don’t mind doing what others don’t want to do or can’t do, you’ve got a real opportunity on your hands.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I had never painted a house nor hung wallpaper before in my life. I just went to the library and checked out how-to books. For other info, I asked advice at the paint stores where I bought supplies. They were happy to help me.

Another time, I was in a small city of about 150,000. This was well before the age of computers.

I looked around and saw that there were only two or three fairly large typewriter repair shops, and they were expensive, so I went to the library and looked up a supplier of typewriter parts and tools.

The next day, I put a small classified ad in the newspaper, offering to repair typewriters.

Your Typewriter Repaired Fast
Satisfaction absolutely guaranteed
If it doesn’t work right, you don’t pay

That supplier gladly sold me parts in lots of one and two, and resurfaced the rubber plattens when they required it.

Again, I had never repaired a typewriter, but I managed to fix every machine, manual or electric, that came my way. My price was good, and I delivered fast.

Although I wasn’t flooded with work, it paid the rent, put groceries on the table and left me with considerable free time to read and goof off.

Today, the opportunity won’t be in typewriters. Think computers, web design, ad writing. If you have strong English skills, you can even do rewriting, like I did for more than 16 years here in Japan.

But you don’t have to go to Japan to find customers.

Consider how many non-native English speakers need help with the English on their websites. Visitors judge them by the quality of their English, and if they are not a native speaker, they will be judged harshly. It’s not fair, but they will be judged.

You could help them present a more professional face.

That’s just one possibility. There are literally millions of small (and not-so-small) opportunities out there. With some clever promoting, you could end up making a six-figure income without even having a product.

I’ve found that if you’ll just try, you can do nearly anything. There are always small gems, little opportunities, lying around just waiting for somebody to come along and pick them up.

But they’re often lying in the dirt. If a little dirt’s no problem, you can always make a decent living.

By the way, that wallet I found? It also contained 20 lottery tickets. When I checked them, there were no big winners, only two very small ones – but they did provide me 200 yen (about $1.50 or so).

Who says you have to win big to be a winner?

Never Break Another Habit.

Got a habit you’d like to break?

Smoking? Overeating? Drinking? Complaining?

Whatever you’re battling, I’ve got some good news: it’s impossible to “break” a habit.

Now you’re probably thinking, “Hey, Burke, what kind of good news is that?” Or maybe, “If you’ve got some more good news like that, keep it to yourself.”

But hear me out.

Every habit starts out as an effort to accomplish something positive.

Biting your nails? It usually begins as a way to distract yourself from feelings of nervousness.

Drinking? Gambling? Sex? Overeating? Those get a foothold in your life when you’re looking for something to make you feel good. Chronic complaining may be a way to regain a little power.

So the most effective way to deal with a habit is to treat it as a living (or semi-living) entity that has your best interests at heart.

Once a habit is born, it’s not going to just lie down and quit doing its job. Oh no, that habit is there to guard you and improve your life — even if it kills you. (I never said a habit is smart, just alive.)

Napoleon Hill wrote, “In every adversity there is the seed of an equivalent or greater advantage.”

That’s even true for a habit you’d like to be rid of.

And it’s simple to do if you’ll just create a new habit and piggyback it on top of the original habit.

I watched my father quit smoking when he was 43 years old.

After smoking for nearly 30 years, he had a coughing fit one day that turned him purple, staggered him sagging and breathless against a wall, and left him barely conscious.

That afternoon he quietly decided that he was through smoking forever.

All his friends laughed, of course. He’d been a 3-4 pack a day man for as long as they knew him.

But he did quit. Then and there.

Months later, I overheard him explain how he did it.

First, he WANTED to do it… he was motivated. Once he had that, all he needed was a method. A technique.

He kept the cigarettes right there in the same shirt pocket. We wanted to be able to reach for those smokes just like always. So he kept them where he knew they would trigger his habit.

But then — and this is where it gets interesting — as soon as he caught himself pulling out the pack and tapping out a cigarette, he inserted a new habit to piggyback on the old one. With the unlit cigarette in his hand, he’d walk to a trash can and shred the tobacco between his fingers and throw it away.

Then he’d slip the pack back into his shirt pocket.

He could always pull out a second one and smoke it if he wanted to, but he had a choice. That second one wasn’t a habit — only the first one was.

He continued to “use” 3-4 packs a day for a couple of days, but gradually that new, piggybacked habit began to go on automatic. He’d get the urge to smoke, reach for the pack, and then, before pulling it out, he was already rubbing his fingers together, as though shredding the cigarette.

Over the next two weeks, I watched my father become a non-smoker, simply by using his first habit and adding onto it, rather than fighting against it.

Does this give you any ideas for your own habits?

Do you find yourself pulling food out of the refrigerator or pantry before you’re even aware of it?

Why not pull those silly pictures off the fridge door — you know, the ones that are supposed to make you feel guilty? Instead, keep a large supply of something that will fill you up. Don’t stop cramming those chocolates into your mouth. Just make a deal with yourself: you can still have all the candy you usually eat, but first, you’ll eat a raw carrot before you do the candy, the fried chicken and the three pizzas.

You’re not taking anything away from yourself. You’re actually adding new choices.

It’s a way to buy yourself time. If you can stop and come back down from automatic for a minute or two, it’ll give you a choice regarding what you’re doing.

If it’s addiction to sex, make a deal with yourself that when you walk over and introduce yourself to that next gorgeous person, you’ll first do something totally different. Maybe you’ll call your spouse and tell him/her that you love them. Or maybe you’ll ask that blond if they’d like to come home and meet your wife/husband. A simple thing really. Just to interrupt the usual automatic flow.

Gambling? Alcohol? Both GA and AA have excellent programs based on admitting you’ve got a problem, and then building from there.

Whatever the problem, you can change it by using it as a foundation stone.

Maybe it’s complaining. Each time you catch yourself, you might stop and insert a positive statement on the subject: “The boss is such an utter ass … but of course, he’s also smart enough to hire me.”

Is it a constant lack of money?

Some of the most highly motivated business people I’ve ever seen were once destitute. And now they use their former lack as a driving force to keep them moving.

They don’t deny what they’ve been through, but at the same time, they don’t let those experiences be the only definition of who they are. They take whatever block they stumble over, and they climb up on it and keep going.

So instead of trying to break what you’ve got, just figure out a way to use it.

Build on that “problem” and incorporate it as one of your strengths.

Try it today. Start looking for ways to put your energies into building instead of breaking.

You and your habits will be happier for it.
